Talc, is a clay mineral, generally referred as the “secret ingredient”, composed of hydrated magnesium silicate H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 . It has colourless, odourless, insoluble and inert physical characteristics due to which is considered to be a highly effective material withthe wide range of applications.
Talcum as filler provides excellent chemical properties, such as high fire and acid resistance, insulation, effective lubricity, soft and elastic texture, high oil adsorption, glow – luster and etc.Main industrial applications of ground Talc powder are high-end industrial coating paints, high - end plastic products, rubber, industrial ceramics, paper, plaster and other industries.
Talc serves as filler in paper pulp. It provides rolled into the sheets pulps with a much smoother writing surface by filling spaces between the pulp fibres. Talc improves the brightness, whiteness, opacity of paper and also its ability to absorb ink.
Pigments & Coatings
Talc has been used in the production of the materials widely used in the building interiors sector. It serves as a base content for products as paints and wall coatings.
Plastics & Rubber
Talc enhances properties of polyolefin compounds in plastics such as polypropylene and increase the stiffness of products such as vinyl, polyethylene, nylon, and polyester.
It is also preferred to use in road line paint, floor coverings as it has high mechanical strength features.
Talc when applied as filler in ceramics can improve the firing characteristics of the greenwareand the earthenware giving strength to the finished product.
Talc is important functional filler in putties made of unsaturated polyester.Furthermore, recently application on patents allowing the use of magnesium silicate as a cement substitute ismade and pending for confirmation. The production requirements for the material are less energy-intensive than ordinary Portland cement by absorbing far more carbon dioxide as it hardens.
Food & Fodders
Talc is used as food additive. In the European Union, the additive number is E553b.
Cosmetics & Personal Care
In the cosmetics and personal care sector, extra-fine talc is supremely important as a base material for powders and rouge. Also, Talc with heavy refinement, is used in baby powder, an astringent powder used to prevent diaper rash.
Medicine / Pharmaceuticals
Natural mineral talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate that can be used to produce magnesia mattes at high temperatures. Talc has been used as a glidant in pharmaceutical products.
